Margaret Mary ‘Peggy’ Carlton

AGATE HARBOR/ LAKE LINDEN – Margaret Mary “Peggy” Carlton, 93, of Agate Harbor and Lake Linden, passed away in Lake Linden on January 5, 2016.

She was born on November 15, 1922, in Brooklyn, New York, a daughter of Charles and Mary Alice (O’Dea) Taylor.

She graduated from Saint Patrick’s Academy in Syracuse, New York, in 1941. She was employed by Cruse-Hinds, the Internal Revenue Service, and the State of New York.

She was a Navy wife, raising five daughters while transferring duty stations and deployments in New Orleans, Idaho, Virginia, and Maryland.

She was married to Robert Carlton on September 26, 1944, at Saint Patrick’s Church in Syracuse, New York, by Father Thomas Driscoll.

Peg was a devoted mother and raised a family as a military wife. She was a talented and informed social critic of current society; informed by an intense interest in social, political, and economic shifts in society at large. Her love of libraries and education was imparted to her children, however, her generosity and Christian compassion were there for all. Perhaps the most wonderful aspect of Margaret “Peg” was her ability to share her culinary skills, as cooking was a passion. No one ever left her house “hungry.” Her table was always open to all; generosity and kindness were hallmarks of her mothering heart.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Frances and Mary; and brothers, Charles and John.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; five daughters, Dr. Kathleen (Robert “Buzz”) Johnson of Lake Linden, Rosemary (Paul) Arendt of Gretna, Louisiana, Elizabeth (Stormy) Hicks of Carlsbad, California, Theresa (Peter) Clevenstine of Chisholm, Minnesota, Mary Alice of New Orleans; grandchildren, Robert (Erin) and Joe (Ginny) Johnson of Calumet, Margaret (Travis) Hanson of Dollar Bay, Regina (Bill) Melchiori of Wausau, Wisconsin, Dayton, Nathan (Tammy), Ted, Chancler of Carlsbad, California, Margaret (Liam) McHugh of Williston Park, New York; Betsy (Cullen) Hilkene of Manhattan Beach, California, John Faust of Jackson, Missouri, Sam Faust of Hattiesburg, Missouri, Emily Faust of Memphis, Tennesse, Grace of New Orleans, Louisiana and Henry of Calumet; great-grandchildren, Charles and Roselee Johnson, Anna Hanson, Elenore Johnson, Lucy Melchiori, Ryden and Rayne Hicks; sisters-in-law, Pat Chopp of Calumet and Mary Kay (Robert) Masnado of Eagle Harbor.
