Catherine Plowe

HOUGHTON Catherine Plowe, 88, a former resident of Houghton, passed away Friday evening, September 16, 2016, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock, where she had been a resident-patient for the past two years.

She was born on January 25, 1928, on Quincy Hill, a daughter of the late Joseph and Isabelle (O’Brien) Ricci.

She was a graduate of the Hancock High School with the class of 1946 and St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in 1949, becoming an R.N.

Catherine had worked as a surgical nurse for St. Joseph’s Hospital for many years, along with helping her husband operate the Plowe Funeral Home in Houghton.

On August 26, 1950, she was united in marriage to Mort Plowe Jr. at the former Mt. Carmel Church on Quincy Hill.

Mrs. Plowe was an active member of St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton, where she helped organize countless number of funeral lunches with the Altar Society of the church and sang with the church choir.

Catherine was a member of the Runneberg Lodge of Dollar Bay, VFW Auxiliary of Houghton and the Daughters of Italy.

Mrs. Plowe also loved to ice skate and would tell stories of skating as a young girl on Quincy Hill. She also loved to polka dance with Mort, going to dances a couple nights a week.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Mort Jr.; her grandson, Christopher; her brother, Joseph Ricci; along with her parents.

Surviving are her son, James (Jamie) Plowe of Laurium, David (Kathy) Plowe of Houghton; her grandchildren, Jaime (Kevin) Tillis of Arizona, Joseph (Shanna) Plowe of Houghton, Brandon (Katie) Plowe of Chicago, Illinois; a step-granddaughter, Rylee Forman; her sister, Mary (Gene) Janowicz of Green Bay; her brother, John (Kay) Ricci of Hancock; and many nieces, nephews and a special cousin, Corinne (Corky) Plassa.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Catherine will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 22, 2016, at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton with Fr. John Martignon to officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton.

Friends may call on Wednesday, September 21, 2016, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Plowe Funeral Home of Houghton, where a parish Prayer Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. and on Thursday, September 22, 2016, from 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton.

Catherine’s family would like to thank the staffs of the Bluffs Senior Living Community and the Houghton County Medical Care Facility for the care given during her stays.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Omega House or Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly in memory of Catherine Plowe.
