Nancy A. Erva

HANCOCK – Nancy A. Erva, 82, a resident of Hancock, passed away on Thursday, November 3, 2016, at the Omega House in Houghton, after a battle with cancer.

She was born in Hancock on September 9, 1934, the daughter of the late Hilda (Lehto) Ruottinen and Harold Ruottinen. She graduated in 1952, from Hancock Central High School.

Nancy attended Suomi College and Northern Michigan University, graduating with an elementary teaching degree. She taught in the Chassell, Hancock and Osceola Township, Dollar Bay Schools.

Mrs. Erva was a well-liked fourth grade teacher in Dollar Bay for many years. She still has her “crab pins” that became famous throughout her years of teaching in Dollar Bay. She retired in 1988.

On June 23, 1956, Nancy married Earl Erva from Hancock. They were married for 58 years before he passed away.

Nancy is survived by her three children, Karen Erva of Hancock, Robert (Mary) Erva of Houghton and James Erva of Hancock. She is also survived by her two grandchildren, Daniel Erva (Jennifer Hantula and Kierman VandeHey) of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, Amy (Erva) (Matthew) Sundberg of Eagan, Minnesota.

It was Nancy’s wish to be cremated with no service.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at UP Health System-Portage Hospital of Hancock and the Omega House of Houghton for the excellent care they took of Nancy during her stay.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy the family suggests donations to the Omega House at 2211 Maureen Lane, Houghton, 49931.
