Selma J. Kuusisto

HANCOCK – Selma J. Kuusisto, 104, of Hancock, died Thursday, November 10, 2016, at Winona House, PortagePointe.

She was born June 23, 1912, in Coburntown, a daughter of the late Jacob and Aino (Hietala) Hill and attended the Waasa and Salo Schools.

For many years, Selma worked as a dietary aide at the former St. Joseph’s Hospital. Later on, she assisted her husband doing custodial work at the former Franklin Street Apostolic Lutheran Church in Hancock.

Selma was married to Sam Kuusisto on July 9, 1938, on the family farm in Waasa. Sam passed away on October 18, 1994.

Selma was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Hancock. She devoted her time to prayer and reading the Bible.

Selma was an avid vegetable gardener and beekeeper. She was very health minded in her diet and enjoyed canning vegetables, fruit and making honey. Sunday dinners at the family home were open to anyone. Selma always made sure there was plenty of food to go around. Selma loved caring for her family. She had a special concern in her heart for her daughter, Eva.

Besides her parents; and husband; Selma was also preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Trasti; and several siblings.

Selma is survived by her three children, Eva Kuusisto of Hubbell, Carol Dunstan of Dollar Bay, special friend, Burt Arola and James (JoAnn) Kuusisto of Calumet; seven grandchildren, Susan (Tim) Spelich, Cheryl (Bill) Stimac, Diane Dunstan and friend, Dean Bleise, Robert (Lucia) Dunstan, Jeremy Trasti, Jennifer (Luke) Zaremba, Jon (Kelly) Trasti; several great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Paul Trasti of Mohawk; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 16, 2016, at Zion Lutheran Church in Hancock, with Pastors Jesse Aho and Arvo Onermaa to officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday in the church.

Burial will be in the Waasa Cemetery.
