Charlotte M. “Char” Castle

GLADSTONE – Charlotte M. “Char” Castle, 96, of Gladstone, passed away Tuesday evening, January 3, 2017, at the Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba.

Char was born on December 3, 1920, in Dollar Bay, the daughter of John and Delia (Harper) Cane.

Char was raised in Ontonagon and was a 1939 Ontonagon High School graduate.

She was united in marriage to Ralph E. Barry on October 14, 1939. To this union, two children were born, Sharon and a daughter, who passed in infancy, Karen.

Following her husband’s passing in 1968, Char completed a course in accounting at Northern Michigan University and moved to Escanaba.

She married James Castle in Escanaba, in 1971. They later divorced.

Char was a long time volunteer at St. Vincent De Paul and was an active member of civic and political organizations in Ontonagon County.

Char enjoyed her garden and was an active outdoors woman who loved deer hunting and sports.

Charlotte is survived by one daughter, Sharon (William) Pidgeon of Gillette, Wyoming; four grandchildren, Rebecca (Dave) Brown of Lolo, Montana, Theresa (Leo) Miller of Gillette, Wyoming, Debra (Gary) Bass of Gillette, Wyoming, Kay (Kevin) Sanger of Ft. Collins, Colorado; seven great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, one niece, Carolyn (Lloyd) Martindale; and special friend, William Lamarche and Lamarche family.

Char was preceded in death by her former husband, Ralph E. Barry; and an infant daughter, Karen Barry.

Char’s family will receive friends on Thursday, January 12, 2017, from 3 p.m. until Vincentian Wake Service at 4:50 p.m. followed by closing prayers at 5 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Escanaba. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, January 13, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Flat Rock with Rev. Fr. John Longbucco officiating.

Char will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery in Ontonagon.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Vincent de Paul Society.
