Alberta Mattila

CALUMET – Alberta Mattila, 77, a resident of Calumet, passed away on Friday, February 17, 2017, at UP Health System-Marquette.

She was born on November 20, 1939, in Calumet, to William and Evangeline (Martin) Sakkinen.

She attended Calumet High School and married Willis Mattila in Calumet on December 29, 1956.

Alberta worked for B.H.K. Child Development for many years as a bus driver, retiring in 2005.

She was an avid reader, loved to do her crossword puzzles and spend time with her beloved dog Kia. She loved to spend time at the family camp in Lac La Belle.

She also loved to spend time with her family. They meant the world to her!

Alberta is preceded in death by her parents, William and Evangeline; one son, Robert “Boomer” Mattila; and one brother, Robert Sakkinen.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Willis Mattila of Kearsarge; sons, Donald (Cathleen) Mattila of Mohawk, Jim Mattila of Phillipsville; daughters, Lynn Simons of Calumet, Kathy Meyer of Laurium, Karen (Mark) Dyni of Rabbit Bay, Julie (Joe) Farrell of Austin, Texas; 12 grandchildren, Steven Simons, Jared Mattila, Jason Mattila, Melissa and Tanya Couvion, Bryan Mattila, Amy Mattila, Jacob Mattila, Sophia Mattila, Christopher Farrell, Nicholas Farrell and Justin Farrell; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Jim (Mickey) Sakkinen of Kenosha, Wisconsin, Art (Lee) Sakkinen of Calumet; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Per Alberta’s wishes, cremation has taken place and private immediate family services will be held.
