Marjorie Kovachich

CALUMET – Marjorie Kovachich, passed away at her home in the same manner she lived, gracefully and peacefully, on March 17, 2017.

Margie was born July 2, 1922 to Mike and Mary (Kasun) Perko. She grew up in Raymbaultown on Calumet Avenue, a few blocks from her beloved current home. She graduated from Calumet High School in 1941. On November 6, 1946, she married John Kovachich at St. John’s Croatian Church in Calumet.

As a teen, Margie worked at the Laurium Peoples Theater and the Calumet Theater. When she graduated from high school, she was employed by Vertins Department Store in Calumet. She was an elevator operator for a short time, a shoe department clerk, and finally a bookkeeper, a position she enjoyed immensely. She worked at Vertins for nine years before stopping to focus on raising her family.

Margie belonged to St. Paul the Apostle Church in Calumet and was a member of the Calumet Lady Elks. She was a wonderful cook and baker and was known for making everything in large quantities. Among her specialties were ravioli, pasties, povetica and deep fried saffron buns. She loved cooking for her family and seeing everyone eat. She always kept homemade cookies in the freezer for her son, Mike, when he came by.

Among Margie’s favorite pastimes were taking long rides with her son, and every ride ended with Margie saying, “go through Calumet”, “go through Raymbaultown”. She also enjoyed visiting her daughter and family in Green Bay. Margie loved the outdoors and was an avid walker for many years, usually 3-5 miles a day. During the summer months, Margie spent a lot of time in her backyard. She had a “green thumb” as was evidenced by her many household plants and flower garden. Additional pastimes included working puzzle books and watching the traffic from her Calumet Avenue porch. She enjoyed traveling, and visited many places with her daughter Mary and son-in-law Jim. Included among her travels were Disney World, Nashville, Branson Missouri, Milwaukee, Canada, New York City, Washington D.C. and Las Vegas.

Above all else, Margie enjoyed time with her family. She was the happiest when they were around, and beamed when they walked into the house, especially if it was a grandchild. A frequent comment was, “isn’t it nice to have family!”

Margie will be deeply missed by son, Mike (Andy) Kovachich; daughter, Mary (Jim) Lienau; and grandchildren Krissy (Mike) DeLesha, Michelle Kovachich, James Lienau and Johnny Lienau.

She was preceded in death by her husband John, January 30, 2001, her parents, brother Mike Perko, sister Mary Perko, and father-in-law and mother-in law, John and Cecile (Sekula) Kovachich.

There will be a visitation for family and friends at Ryan Funeral home in Calumet Friday, March 24, 2017, from 4-8 PM. A rosary will be prayed at 7:30. A Mass of Christian Burial, with Rev. Fr. Abraham Mupparathara to officiate, will be held at 11 a.m. Sat, March 25, at St. Paul The Apostle Church in Calumet.
