Ernest Morris Kunick

BARAGA — Ernest Morris Kunick, 78, of Baraga, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

He was born July 6, 1939, in Baraga, son of Ernest and Anna (Sterk) Kunick. Ernest graduated from Baraga High School in 1957. He was in the National Guard for eight years.

On June 3, 1967, Ernest married the former Katherine Stroube in Escanaba. From 1959-70 he worked for Lakeview Lumber in L’Anse. He then worked for the State of Michigan, Dept. of Corrections as a carpenter working on various building projects across the upper peninsula; retiring in 2000. Ernest was also an EMT with Bay Ambulance for 10 years, and served on the Baraga Village Council.

Ernest was a member of the L’Anse United Methodist Church, Ottawa Sportsman’s Club and American Legion Post 444. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, gardener and enjoyed woodworking and fixing things. Ernest had a kind heart and was always caring for other people.

Surviving are his wife, Kathe Kunick of Baraga; son, Jason Kunick of Baraga; sisters, Ann Swartz of Baraga, Frances Chartier of Fremont, Michigan; numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; seven sisters and one brother.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 29, 2018, at 12 p.m. at L’Anse United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Rhoades officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Luncheon and fellowship will follow in the Fellowship Hall. The burial will be in the spring in the Baraga Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the L’Anse United Methodist Church memorial fund.
