Edgar A. ‘Socko’ Larche

ESCANABA — Edgar A. “Socko” Larche, 87, of Escanaba, passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at Lakeview Assisted Living in Gladstone.

He was born on December 22, 1930, in Dollar Bay, son of Arthur J. and Laura M. (Miron) Larche.

Socko was born, raised and attended school in Dollar Bay, graduating Class of 1949. He graduated with honors from Michigan Tech University.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was stationed in Japan and Korea between 1951-1953, where he worked in communications.

On June 12, 1954, Edgar Larche married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Glanville in Dollar Bay. She preceded him in death on March 15, 2011.

Socko was an accountant and in the 1950s, he along with two partners started Schneider, Larche and Haapala. He was president of AICPA for many years.

He was a longtime member of the Elks Lodge 354 and past president of the Escanaba Country Club.

Socko loved traveling to Vegas, 4th of July celebrations in the Copper Country, Thanksgiving with his family and all other opportunities to gather and enjoy his friends and family.

In his later years, he enjoyed his time spent with his friends and caregivers, Barb and Diane Bartley.

Among survivors include his three sons, Mark (Sherry) Larche of Manistique, Brian (Nancy) Larche of Escanaba and Jeff Larche of Chicago; his grandchildren, Brooke (Bob) Prins, Brandon (Kristen) Larche, Toni Larche (Gary Doup) and Michelle (Ben) Varoni; his great grandchildren, Elena, Alex, Jack, Avah, Amiyah, Tucker and Tate Socko; his sister, Patricia (Tom) Hampton of Lansing and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Myrtle (William) Hillenbrand and Evelyn (Harry) Nye.

Visitation will be on Monday, March 19, 2018, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba. Veteran services will take place at 3 p.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 5:30 p.m. at St. Anne’s Church with Rev. Fran DeGroot officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.

Entombment will be next to his wife in the Gardens of Rest Mausoleum in Wells.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Edgar and Barbara Larche Bay College Scholarship Nursing Program.
