Mary Lou Maki

HOUGHTON — Mary Lou Maki, 79, a former resident of Houghton, passed away Friday evening, March 16, 2018, at the Medora House of Portage Pointe in Hancock, where she had been a resident.

She was born on October 29, 1938, in Detroit, a daughter of the late Lillian (McLean) Adams.

As a child she moved to Hancock, where she was a graduate of the Hancock High School with the Class of 1956.

On July 25, 1959, she was united in marriage to Sherwood “Muck” Maki. The couple resided in Twin Lakes, where they raised five children. On October 15, 2006, Sherwood preceded Mary Lou in death.

Mrs. Maki enjoyed knitting, crocheting and spending the winters in Tucson, Arizona, with Sherwood during his retirement.

For many years, she served on the Elm River Township Board of Review. Mary Lou was elected to several terms as a member of the Elm River Township School Board, including multiple terms as the School Board president.

Surviving are her children, Kristy (Ken) Wirkula of Sands Township, Michigan, Bradley Maki (retired Naval Officer) of Las Vegas, Nevada, Stuart Maki of Sands Township, Kimberly (Dean) Wolter of Hancock, and Jon Paul Maki of Leesburg, Virginia; her grandchildren, Cheyenne Wirkula, Todd Maki, Jourdan (Andrew) Quinn, Jeremy Wolter, Jenni Wolter and Jacob Wolter; her great- grandchildren, Chloe and Mason Quinn; and several cousins.
