Mildred H. Maki

HANCOCK — Mildred H. Maki, 91, passed away peacefully with her son and daughter-in-law by her side, Monday morning, July 16, 2018.

Millie was born in Hubbell, on February 10, 1927, to the late Hjalmer and Hilda Anderson. As a very young child, the family moved to Rauhala road where Millie was raised.

She graduated from Houghton High School, then worked at the local dime store, Woolworth’s. After that, she worked at the Bridgeman-Russell company.

Millie met Arthur Maki of Hancock, they married in October of 1950. Together they made a loving home for themselves and their two sons.

Millie was a stay-at- home mother, devoting all her energy into raising her boys, and later in life helping to raise her grandchildren.

She loved to bake, cross-stitch, cross-country ski and follow Detroit sports. She loved God and lived a very happy life.

Millie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur; her son, Kenneth; her brothers, Melvin (Eleanor) Anderson and Reino Anderson; her sister, Margie (James) Markham, and her special companion, Bear.

She is survived by her son, Roger (Debra) Maki; her nine grandchildren, Kurt (Stephanie) Maki, Kevin Maki, Kylene (Robbie) Gilles, Konnie (Nic) Bonini, Karl (Sarah) Maki, Kiira (Jeff) Baril, Jessica (Mike) Guoin, Jennifer (Tony) Sleeman and Jeff (Ashley) Maki; 24 great-grandchildren; her daughter-in-law, Kim Maki; her sisters, Helen (Peter) Kinnunen and Loie (Milton) Erva; her brother, Mike (Margie) Anderson; her sisters-in-law, Shirley Anderson and Ruth Maki; and a devoted life-long friend, Ruth (Koskela) Johnson.

The family would like to thank Dr. William Anderson, Dr. Thomas McConnon, Melissa Salani, PA, Dr. Tim LaBonte, Mercy Ambulance and UP Health System-Portage for helping the family. A very special thank you to Peggy and the crew at UPCAP for everything they have done to keep Millie safe and happy in her own home. Thank you to Portage Health Home Services, especially Valerie Abe, for going above and beyond to care for all of Millie’s needs.
