Marvin R. Allen

CALUMET — Marvin R. Allen, 90, a resident of Calumet, passed away on Friday, May 10, 2019 at the Omega House in Houghton.

He was born on January 7, 1929, to Cephas and Edna (Jackson) Allen. Marvin spent his childhood on the family farm in Gratiot County during the Great Depression. In 1946, he and his family moved to the Upper Peninsula. He graduated from Gould City High School. After graduating from high school, he enlisted with the United States Navy serving during the Korean War.

Marvin worked for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for 32 years in the Forest Management Division, retiring in 1984.

Marvin was an extraordinary carpenter. He also enjoyed being outdoors whether he was hunting, fishing, or snowmobiling.

He was very involved with the First Baptist Church in Calumet. He served in various positions with the churches AWANA program. He was also very involved with the VFW, having served as Vice President for the state VFW.

In 1953, he married Patricia. She preceded him in death in 2003.

In December of 2004, he married Margaret (Heikkinen) Sohlden at First Baptist Church in Calumet.

Marvin was a lifetime member of the Calumet VFW Post #3900, First Baptist Church, NRA, Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsman Club, and the Lake Linden-Hubbell Sportsman Club.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Patricia; and his brother, Roger.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Calumet; his foster son, Terry Noe of Texas; his step children, Mike Sohlden of Calumet, and Mary Pearson of Laurium; his brother, Gary Allen of Watersmeet; his sisters, Maxine Barber of Sterling Heights, Marcella Church of Traverse City, and Mildred Allen of Oregon; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The memorial service will be held on Friday, May 17, 2019 at First Baptist Church in Calumet at 2 p.m. with Pastor Tony Laidlaw and Pastor Bruce Nolen to officiate. Friends may call at the First Baptist Church in Calumet from 1 p.m. until the time of the service on Friday, May 17, 2019.

In lieu of expressions of sympathy, friends may send donations to Calumet VFW Post #3900, 26628 Larch St., Calumet, MI 49913; or the First Baptist Church, 26031 Depot St., Calumet, MI 49913.
