Joseph P. Monroe

CALUMET – Joseph P. Monroe, 66, a resident of Calumet, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2019, at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital.

He was born on November 29, 1952, in Lansing, to Maurice and Helen (Berger) Monroe.

He attended Webberville High School and graduated with the Class of 1971. Following high school, Joe began working for a local gas station. He then went to work as a tool & die technician for Teledyre in Howell. While downstate he had his two children, Becky and Joe Jr., with wife, Barb.

He moved up to Eagle Harbor with his second wife, Sue. While up in the Copper Country, he worked for Keweenaw Mountain Lodge and YSI. After retiring from YSI, He began working for Keweenaw Memorial Medical Center in the maintenance department. He retired from Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital this past August.

He found and fell in love with Andrea (Freeze) in 2015. He married her on December 16, 2018.

Joe enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially fly fishing. He loved tying flies, loved spending time with his dogs, and hunting for that perfect agate. He enjoyed spending time outdoors. He was an avid gun collector, and would also make his own bullets. Joe was known for his infectious smile. He always had a pocket full of lifesavers and fireball candies which were his favorite! He enjoyed the people he worked with at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital during his afternoon shifts.

Joe was a member of the Eagle Harbor Township Fire Department and the Calumet Village Fire Department.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Helen Monroe; his brother, Mo Monroe; and his sister, Betty Kidd.

He is survived by his wife, Andrea of Calumet; his children, Joe (April) Monroe of Hancock, Becky (Mike) Chambers of Webberville, Robert (Jennifer) Freeze of Gwinn, Tiffany Freeze of Atlanta, Georgia, and Ronald (Joyce) Freeze of Grand Rapids; his grandchildren, Joey, Parker, Michaela, Sydney, James, Reilly, Catie (Tyler) Kangas, Cory, Kristin, Kevin, Caroline, Richard, and Emma; his siblings, Lynda (Paul) Hetrick, Chris (Deb) Monroe, Steve (Maurine) Monroe, Barb Monroe, and Mary (Bill) Walton; his sister-in-law, Alice Monroe; brother-in-law, David Kidd; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and friends too many to count.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2019, at 11 a.m. at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet, with Reverend Laura Eaton to officiate.

Friends may call at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet, on Saturday, June 15, 2019, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m.

A small luncheon will be served at the Calumet school commissary after the service.

Another memorial service will also take place in Williamston, at a future date where Joe will be laid to rest.
