Maria Rachel Sturos

LAURIUM — Maria Rachel Sturos, 81, of Laurium, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 2, 2019.

Maria was born on April 10, 1938, in L’Anse, to the late Aaron and Martha (Waara) Storm. She attended L’Anse Schools prior to moving to Detroit in 1954, and then graduated from Cody High School in Detroit, in 1956.

Maria was united in marriage to Robert Arne Sturos on June 15, 1957, in Detroit. Robert passed away on January 5, 2004. Together they raised 10 children and moved to Laurium, in 1969.

Maria was a homemaker. Prior to her marriage she worked for Ford Motor Company. In her later years, she volunteered at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital Auxiliary.

Maria is survived by her children, Paul (Elaine) of Lake Linden, Peter (Sue) of Brighton, Philip (Danita) of Lake Linden, Shannon (Dan) Kilpela of Dollar Bay, David (Renee) of Fowlerville, Kurt (Katy) of Howell, Michael of Laurium, Martha (Bill) Larson of Laurium, Gretchen (James) Pinoniemi of Menahga, Minnesota, and John (Maria) of Hancock; 84 grandchildren; and 93 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Irene (the late Kirby) Frantti of Hancock, Aaron (Janet) Storm of Houghton, James (Eva) Storm of Brighton, John Paul (Judy) Storm of Lake Linden, Elizabeth (Phillip) Ramberg of Farmington, Phillip (Mary) Storm of Dollar Bay, and David (June) Storm of Hancock; her in-laws; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet on Wednesday, June 5, 2019, at 11 a.m. with pastor David Taivalkoski to officiate.

The visitation will be held from 4 p.m.until 8 p.m. at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, and on Wednesday June 5, 2019 from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m.

The burial will be at the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.
