Thomas ‘Shakey’ Neher

HANCOCK — Thomas “Shakey” Neher, 80, a well-known former business owner in Hancock, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2019, at the UP-Health Marquette Hospital, following a short illness.

Tom was born on June 19, 1938, in Hancock, a son of the late Joseph and Genevie (Ryan) Neher. He was raised in Hancock and graduated from Hancock High School with the Class of 1957.

Mr. Neher was proud to have served with the United States Navy aboard the USS DesMoines.

Following his time in the Navy, Shakey returned home to a career in the restaurant business, first working at and eventually purchasing and operating Gino’s Restaurant in Hancock, until his retirement in 2013. He also worked for a short time for Michigan Technological University and the Ambassador Restaurant.

Shakey was an avid Green Bay Packer fan, enjoyed being with his family, working in his flower and vegetable gardens, and tending his fruit trees.

Preceding him in death were his daughter, DeeDee; his parents; his infant brother, Billy; and his sister, Pat Hennegan.

Surviving are his sons, Thomas (Nancy) Neher of Omro, Wisconsin, Joe (Dawn) Neher of Hancock, and Gerry Neher of Marquette; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; lifelong friend/bride, Laverne Soronen of Hancock; his brother, Joseph (Sheri) Neher of the Hancock Canal; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends

A prayer service for Shakey will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, 2019, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock, with Fr. John Martignon to officiate.

Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery of Hancock where military honors will be conducted by the Copper Country Veterans Association.

Friends may call on Saturday, June 8, 2019, from 9 a.m. until the time of services at the Memorial Chapel funeral home of Hancock.
