Michael Allan Monberg

MARQUETTE – Michael Allan Monberg, 67, peacefully passed away on Thursday, August 1, 2019, at the UPHS hospital in Marquette. He had fallen and suffered a head injury while in the Copper Country, to attend the Hancock All School Reunion.

Michael was born in Chicago, on August 18, 1952. His parents, Warren and Joan Monberg, moved the family to Hancock in 1956, in order for Warren to work with Gundlach Construction. Mike graduated from Hancock Central High, whereupon he volunteered to serve his country in the U.S. Navy from 1971 through 1973.

He is a veteran of the Vietnam war where he served on the U.S.S. Turner Joy.

Following his honorable discharge, he attended Gogebic Community College and then Western Michigan University, graduating in 1977, with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Michael moved to Florida, where he embarked upon a career of retail management.

Mike married Sue McCracken and they raised their family in the Orlando area. He loved to play golf when his bad back would permit. He was a dedicated cook and outdoor grill chef. Mike was a big fan of Michigan Wolverine athletics who attended many Bowl games, and suffered through too many losses to the OSU Buckeyes. He loved to return to the Copper Country during the summer with his family and visit with his many friends.

Mike was predeceased by his parents, Warren and Joan Monberg; and his uncle, Jim Jacobson.

He is survived by his brothers, Eric (Wendy) Monberg, Dan (Dina) Monberg, and Marc Monberg; sister, Nicole (Van) VandeVeere; aunt, Judy Jacobson; son, Ryan Monberg; daughter, Megan Almand; granddaughter, Sage Almand; nieces, Delaney Monberg and Tara Shirreff; and nephew, Devyn Monberg.

The family wants to thank the UPHS-Marquette and Portage for the first-rate care he received after the accident, as well as his many friends who prayed for him.

Plans for a memorial service are incomplete at this time.
