Suzanne Lea (Wareham) Aho

DURHAM, NC — Suzanne Aho, 70, of Keller, Texas, went home to be with her Lord on December 21, 2019, at Duke University Hospital in Durham, after a brief but valiant battle with metastatic melanoma.

She was born on November 30, 1949 in Hancock to James and Mildred Wareham. Suzanne (Sue) grew up in Mason, attended Osceola Township schools, and graduated from Dollar Bay High School in 1967. On August 8, 1970, she was united in marriage with her high school sweetheart, Roy W. Aho of Tamarack City.

Sue graduated from Michigan Tech University with a major in math and minor in physics in 1971. After graduation, she began her working career at the former Stern and Fields department store in Hancock as a bookkeeper. She moved to Portage View Hospital as the Accounts Payable and Payroll clerk until their first son was born in 1977. At that point she began her career as a stay-at-home mom.

In 1991, after years of volunteering in her sons’ schools, Sue went back to work in the Keller Independent School District as secretary to the guidance counselor at Keller Middle School. She retired from KISD in June 2008, as the assistant to the Director of Guidance and Counseling for the school district of some 32,000 students.

Since her retirement in 2008, she and Roy have spent their summers at their log cabin on Lake Superior near Freda, and their winters traveling across the south in their motorhome visiting their nine grandchildren.

Sue’s passion was her family. She loved nothing more than spending time with her grandchildren. She was a loving wife, mother, Nana, and friend. She loved to cook and bake, and share her nisu, pasties, and thimbleberry jam with neighbors and friends. Her hobby was her handwork, and she shared many of her cross-stitch projects, Christmas stockings, and Christmas tree skirts with relatives and friends.

Suzanne is survived by her loving husband, Roy; her three sons, Chris (Natalie) of Oxford, North Carolina, Jeff (Natalie) of Apopka, Flordia, and Brad (Becky) of Ft Worth, Texas; her nine grandchildren, Cameron and Finley of Oxford, Braden, Parker, and Kinley of Apopka, and Callie, Colson, Cambrie, and Caslyn of Ft. Worth; her sister, Pamela (Robert) Washnock of Vail, Arizona; brothers-in-law, Duane (Karen) Aho of Dollar Bay, and Tim (Angela) Aho of Crystal Falls; nieces, Heather (Ryan) Bishop of Duluth, Minnesota, Amber (Dylan) Kachur of Lansing; and nephew, Ryan (Rosemary) Aho of Duluth.

Suzanne’s family is planning a celebration of her life in Keller, and later during the summer in the Copper Country. Dates are to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the CaringBridge.org web site, or your favorite Cancer fighting charity. The family is being assisted with the arrangements by the Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford.
