George A. LaMotte

George A. LaMotte, 89, a resident of Houghton, passed away Thursday, February 13, 2020, at the Omega House with family by his side.

He was born July 26, 1930, in Lake Linden, a son of the late John and Alvina (Breault) LaMotte. He attended the St. Joseph Elementary School in Lake Linden and graduated from the Lake Linden-Hubbell High School in1948..

Following graduation, George entered into the United States Air Force, serving four years during the Korean Campaign, stationed in New Mexico and Japan.

After being discharged from the military, George attended Michigan Technological University for two years.

George was employed at Northern Community Systems as a cable installer and retired as manager from Bresnan Communications in 1987.

George married the former Henrietta Marcotte on August 21, 1954, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Hubbell.

He was a member of St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton, where he served as a Eucharistic minister, usher, and ministered communion to nursing homes. He was a member of the former men’s club of the church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 692 of Hancock, and also served on the Degree Team.

George enjoyed woodworking and jewelry making in his spare time.

Surviving are his wife, Henrietta of Houghton; six children, Dorothy (David) Ballard of Troy, Michigan, Mary (Paul) Eathorne of Burien, Washington, Michele (Richard) Olson of Lac La Belle, Michael of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, Steven (Julie) LaMotte of Sequim, Washington, Mark (Sarah) LaMotte of Hancock; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, George was also preceded in death by five brothers, John, Russell, Allen, Clarence and Robert; and two sisters, Dorothy LaMotte and Jeanne Dolansky.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 17, 2020, at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in Houghton, with Fr. John Martignon as celebrant. Visitation will be from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. on Monday in the church. Spring burial with military rites will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton. Memorials may be made to the Omega House or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-9929 in the name of George A. LaMotte.
