Donald Lohman

ISHPEMING — Donald Lohman, age 86, of 165 S. Rose St. Ishpeming passed away on Friday, March 27, 2020 at his home, while in the loving care of his daughter Lois.

Don was born July 28, 1933 in Calumet, the son of the late Rose H. (Rosenberger) and Thomas R. Lohman. He was a graduate of the Calumet High School, Class of 1951. He went on to serve in the United States Army from June of 1953 until April of 1955. Don came to Ishpeming in 1964 where he and his late wife Lovie raised their family. Don worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. as an Electrician at the Republic Mine from Sept 1964 till its closure in 1982 when he was transferred to the Tilden Mine till his retirement in July 1995.

While working for CCI, Don served in the United Steelworkers of America where he had previously served as Union President for both the Republic and Tilden Mine Locals. His support and contributions for the many, many years of service to the USWA was greatly appreciated and noteworthy by his fellow USWA members. In the words of a fellow colleague “Don was one of the truly special and principled leaders in the USWA who had given me strength to continue on. It was honor to be your colleague.”

Outside of work and other activities, Don especially enjoyed spending time in the summers at his camp on Big Traverse Bay outside of Lake Linden, MI. He enjoyed fishing on Lake Superior throughout his lifetime, along with hunting in his younger years and keeping his mind sharp by reading. He was a former member of the Ishpeming Elks Lodge No. 447.

He is survived by his children: Daniel (Lori VanLinden) Lohman of Green Bay, WI, Keith Lohman of Calumet, Lois Lohman of Ishpeming and Steve (Cindi) Lohman of Spring Creek, NV; a sister Mary (Ted) Weldum of Negaunee; granddaughters – Ashley Heggaton and Mindy Lohman; 3 great grandchildren – Josie Robson, Brendan Robson and Lyla Quinell, two sisters-in-law – Carol Lohman and Rose Lohman, along with many nieces and nephews and his significant other of the past 22 years Janet Mauno.

Don was preceded in death by his wife LaVerne “Lovie” Lohman, brothers – Thomas, John “Jack” and Paul Lohman; sisters – Dorothy (John) Pietila, Carol (Skip) Bartes and Patricia Lohman.

In accordance with Don’s wishes, cremation will take place and his cremains will be interred at the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet where a graveside service will be held with the date and time to be announced.
