Otto Garrett Bennink

BARAGA — Otto Garrett Bennink, 82, of Baraga, passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2020, at his home in Baraga.

He was born December 12, 1937, on the family farm in Keweenaw Bay, son of Garrett and Lila (Pirkola) Bennink. Otto graduated from Baraga High School in 1956. After high school he worked on the family farm prior to joining the National Guard.

He worked maintenance for CCI in Republic, then he moved to the Detroit area as a machinist, then worked at a chemical plant.

He married Frances Bolton Field in Detroit. They moved back to the U.P. where he worked as a machinist prior to becoming a corrections officer with the State of Michigan, retiring from the Baraga Maximum Facility in 2001 as Captain.

Otto found joy and peace spending time at the family farm in Keweenaw Bay. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being outdoors.

He is survived by his step son, Patrick (Joyce) Field of L’Anse; twin brother, Harm (Dianne) Bennink; sisters, Joyce Zipse of L’anse, Priscella (Fred) Sliger of Trout Creek, Janet (Joe) Brisson of Baraga; step grandchildren, Lee, Christopher, Jason; and numerous nieces, nephews, and step great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are his parents Garrett and Lila; wife Frances; brother Harold Bennink; and a grandchild.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Baraga with Rev. Julie Belew officiating.

The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church.

The Baraga County Area Veterans will conduct military rites prior to the service at 2 p.m. at the church. The Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
