John J. Massi

CALUMET — John J. Massi, 86, a resident of Calumet, passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2020, at UP Health System-Portage.

He was born on May 1, 1934, in Calumet, to Peter and Madeline (Colombo) Massi. He attended the local schools and graduated from Calumet High School with the Class of 1952.

Following high school, John enlisted with the United States Army, he was honorably discharged in 1958.

John started working for A&P Store in Calumet, then went to Quality Market where he worked as a butcher and retired as manager for the meat department after working for 45 years.

John enjoyed gardening. He would compete with his mother to see who could grow the biggest vegetables. He looked forward to receiving packages of cookies and muffins from his granddaughter and would place an order when running low. John was a cook in the Army and his love of cooking continued. He was known for making the perfect mix for ravioli and spaghetti sauce. He enjoyed sports and passed this love to his children.

On September 10, 1960, he was united in marriage to the former Marie Ozello in the Sacred Heart Church in Calumet.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Calumet and the Christopher Columbus Society.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Madeline Massi; his wife, Marie; his sister and brother-in-law Adeline (Jerome) Hammes; and his niece, Kathy Hammes.

He is survived by his children, Marty (Peg Digby) Massi of Chandler, Arizona, Mary Claire (David) Massi-Lee of Escanaba; and his granddaughter, Hannah Marie Lee of Escanaba

A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, September 14, 2020, at 12 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Church in Calumet, with Father Gracious Pulimoottil to officiate.

Friends may call at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home on Monday from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Please observe social distancing and wear a mask due to the current COVID-19 restrictions.

Burial will take place at the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.
