Susan Ellen Hooker

Susan was the daughter of Lee and Francis Hooker and sibling of Charles Austin and Nancy Nelson.

Susan graduated from Houghton High School and went on to receive a bachelor’s in business from Michigan State University. Upon graduation, Susan joined the military and eventually retired as a Lt. Col. U.S. Army National Guard Reservist. Susan also worked around the world as a telecommunications specialist.

Susan had many passions in her life. She traveled extensively and lived in several countries. She loved to collect special items from each country she visited and displayed them proudly in her home. Susan loved to sing and play the piano. She was a member of the Sweet Adeline Chorus and the MTU choir. Susan was a board member of the Pine Mountain Music Festival. She also was an accomplished artist. Among other places, she displayed her works at the Copper Country Art studio and in Copper Harbor. Susan was fond of sewing and her scarves can be found throughout the Copper Country keeping her friends warm.

Susan loved being outdoors and could often be found out skiing, hiking, biking or kayaking with her friends. She also took many trips with her friends on outdoor adventures.

She is survived by her sister, Nancy Nelson; her three nieces, Karen (Jay) Frost, Kimberly (Edward) Fischer, Sarah Hughes; and many grand nieces and nephews; and her Copper Country Family – the Keweenaw Trailseekers.

She was preceded in her death by her parents, Lee and Francis Hooker; her brother, Charles Austin; and by her stepson, Jason Tull.

A time to celebrate Susan’s life will be held Sunday, October 4, 2020, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. with a service at 3 p.m. at the Chassell Pavilion. Military Honors will be conducted by the Copper Country Veterans.
