Alice Mae Markham Phillips

CENTRAL POINTE, Ore. — On Sunday, November 8, 2020, Alice Mae Markham Phillips painlessly and peacefully passed away in her sleep. Alice received her wings and now walks with the angels. Her family was privileged to call her ‘mother’ and ‘grandma’ during the 94 years of her life.

Alice was born February 7, 1926, in Houghton. Alice had fond memories of the family business which included the Markham Candy Company and working on her grandparent’s farm. She graduated from Houghton High School in 1944. While in Michigan, she worked at Gardner’s Clothing Store. Alice married Vernon John Rempert on July 24, 1946, and moved to Southern Oregon the following day. Alice and Vernon were the parents Rosemary Murphy, Kathi Ford, and Verna Markham.

Alice married Hubert Phillips on December 30, 1984, in Reno, Nevada. Alice and Hubert were the parents of Steven Phillips, Paula “Polly” Berry, Priscilla Mae Chaffee, Pamela Updegrave, and Jay Phillips.

Alice loved her farm home in Central Pointe, where she resided for over 40 years. Alice took great pride in her gardens and house plants. Alice had a tender heart and shared her farm with many animals and pets. Alice’s many talents included cooking, canning, and braiding rugs. Alice enjoyed many years as the kitchen manager at the Newberry store in Medford. Alice adored her family and looked forward to family gatherings.

Alice is preceded in death by her parents, Walter Markham and Bertha Collins Markham; her siblings, Charlie, Walter, Harold, Robert, and Barbara Bissinger; husbands, Vernon Rempert and Hubert Phillips; and children, Steven, Paula, and Priscilla.

Alice is survived by her sister, Nellie Kerr; her children, Rosemary, Kathi, Verna, Pamela, and Jay; 26 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Alice was laid to rest inside the mausoleum at Hillcrest memorial park in Medford, Oregon. Alice’s family held a private service on Friday, November 13, 2020, at 2:20 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel.
