Joan Frances Poissant

ISHPEMING — Joan Frances Poissant, 88, passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2021, at her home, while in the loving care of her family and the U.P. Home Health and Hospice.

Joan was the 13th of 14 children born on September 25, 1932, to Albert and Delia (Chandonais) Hainault. Two of her sisters died during the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic, in January 1919, two days apart at the ages of five months and 21 months. She attended grade school at the former St. Cecilia Catholic School in Hubbell and graduated from Lake Linden-Hubbell High School in 1950.

Recently celebrating 69 years of marriage, Joan married Larry Poissant on January 12, 1952, at St. Cecilia Church in Hubbell. They were blessed with seven children. Their second child, Mario Francis, was born prematurely in 1953 and only lived for 5 days.

Born and raised in Hubbell, the family moved to Ishpeming in 1976. Joan was a member of the former St. Pius X Catholic Church and currently a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming. Joan loved to sing and was a member of the parish choir and for many years the Funeral Choir for St. Joseph’s and St. John’s.

She is survived by her husband, Larry; and six children, Laurie Bashaw (Ed Korpi) and her children, Eric (Jenni) Bashaw; Stephanie Burgess and her boys, Sebastian and Benjamin; Holly (Tom) Palmer and their children, Sophia and Jacob; Kevin and his children, Adam (Christi), Abbey (Joe) VanVyckt and their children, Harper and Joey, Michelle (Jim) Hodges and their children, Tom (Gina) and their children, Riley and Gabby; Kori and her children, Rhyan and Mazie; Joe (Shirley) and their children, Jessey (Maddy) and their boys, Freddy and George; Jestina (Tyler) Castagne and their son, Clint; Brett (Taylor Shepeard), Tim; and Greg (Lisa) and their boys, Robert (Vivian) and Alex.

She is also survived by her brother, Joseph Hainault; sister, Patricia Lynch; and sister-in-law, Gretchen Hainault; former daughter-in-law, Mary Poissant; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Joan is preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Delia; and her siblings, Henrietta, Albert “Bud,” Alice, Claire, Dorothy, Loraine, Paul, Ted and sister, Mary Nivard, Betty, and Harry; and her son-in-law, Steve Bashaw.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 26, 2021, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. with Fr. Ryan Ford to officiate. The Mass will be livestreamed, which can be found at ishpemingcatholic.com/live beginning at 11:55 a.m., on Tuesday.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the wearing of facial masks and social distancing is required. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery Columbarium.
