Bible teaches about love

To the editor:

A March 15 letter condemning Christianity and the Bible quoted this from the book, “Letter to a Christian Nation”: “Christians have abused, oppressed, enslaved, insulted, tormented, tortured and killed people in the name of God …”

That also describes what militant atheists did imposing Communist dictatorships on millions of people in the names of their evil “gods”: Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, etc.

True Christians are followers of Jesus Christ. It is misleading to call someone a “Christian” who contradicts or violates what Jesus and the Apostles taught. (Jesus warned that many would come in his name and deceive many.)

Also in that letter from the same book: “Mahavira, the Jain patriarch, surpassed the morality of the Bible with a single sentence: ‘Do not injure, abuse, oppress, enslave, insult, torment, torture or kill any creature or living being.'”

The Bible has numerous teachings about love for God and Man. However, it is realistic about our imperfect world and permits the killing of animals for food to prevent starvation or malnutrition. It also allows us to protect ourselves and others form violent people or dangerous animals.

The Bible predicts a time when “nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.” (Isaiah 2:4)

It also says: “The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall eat hay like the ox …They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain…” (Isaiah 65:25).

Those things will happen when the kingdom of God rules the world, but not until then or by any other method.
