Generous hearts warm community

To the editor:

The Board of Directors of the Keweenaw Heritage Center at St. Anne’s in Calumet would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the community for the outpouring of generous donations after a recent lightning strike. The damage to the steeple was extensive, but we’re extremely thankful for heavy rain at the time which prevented a fire from destroying the entire building.

Since this is the second lightning strike in two years, we are looking into a lightning protection system which could be costly. A third strike could prove even worse.

We’d like to thank Jim and Teri Enrietti and Don Masnado for their kind offer to do a benefit dance last week to raise money for the damage and installation of lightning protection. We were so touched by the large attendance and generous donations that came in.

The community seems to understand what an historic treasure the Keweenaw Heritage Center at St. Anne’s is and really rallied to help save her.

Not only after this incident was that generosity apparent, but for several years the community has been so supportive of fundraising events. Thank you again to all the Musical Monday performers who donated their time and talents for concerts this summer: Kathleen Arten, Jan List, Susie Byykkonen, Gail Irish, Samantha Arten, The Backroom Boys, The Singin Sheriff, Ron Lahti and friends, The Copper Country Community Band and Jim and Teri Enrietti.

Our new Tuesday Night Live Lecture Series this summer was very well received and special thanks to all the great speakers who donated their time and expertise: Jean Ellis, Bob Langseth, Larry Molloy, Bill Rose, Jeremiah Mason, Mike Pflaum, Larry Lankton, Joan Chadde and Mark Rowe.

Special thanks also to community members who worked on this summer’s exhibit “Calumet 1910-1914-Discovering a Woman’s Place In the Community, At Home and In the Workplace”. Committee members: Jean Ellis, Ann Newton, Dan Glinn, Greta Erm, Laura Eaton.

The Keweenaw Heritage Center at St. Anne’s is truly a community center made possible by generous community members.

Thank you all for visiting our exhibits, attending our events and for your kind contributions.

Sincerely,

The Board of Directors of the Keweenaw

Heritage Center at St. Anne’s
