Help support lighting project

To the editor:

As the manager of the Quincy Mine Hoist Association, I would also like to thank all those who have supported the No. 2 Shafthouse lighting project. If it weren’t for the generosity of the community, this project would not ever been possible.

However, I wish to address an apparent misunderstanding about the lighting of the No. 2 shafthouse and the temporary fee change the board decided upon for the dedications.

A recent article in the Gazette reported on sharing the $50 Shafthouse lighting dedication donations with the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission (from Thanksgiving 2013 to Thanksgiving 2014). As a non-profit, this is one way we could help support the purchase of the smelter site. The sharing of funds only applies to the dedications to light the shafthouse.

We continue to accept donations to keep the shafthouse lit.

Regular shafthouse donations can be in any amount, at any time, and all of the donation will be used to keep the lights shining two hours a night during our regular season. As a matter of fact, we just recently received two such generous donations, and all of their donation will be used only to keep the lights on.

Usually the lights are off during the off-season, but can be lit for a six hour time period at any time of the year if a dedication is made.

Dedications made during the regular season will extend the time the lights are on to six hours for the evening of the dedication.

I always look forward to seeing the lights on, and I truly appreciate all of the support the QMHA has received.

Thanks to all of you!

Respectfully Yours,

Glenda J.O. Bierman, Manager

Quincy Mine Hoist Association
