Tournaments were a success

To the editor:

On Saturday, June 7, 2014, U.P. KIDS (formerly the Good Will Farm) held its fourth annual fundraising Bridge and Mah Jongg Tournament. Many people and organizations came together to make this a success.

Our special thanks go out to Superior National Bank & Trust, our main sponsor for the fourth straight year, along with Fred Gaff & Associates, Pepsi-Cola of Houghton, Retirement Solutions headed by Gary Tunstall, and Wickley Insurance and Real Estate.

The outstanding main prizes for the winners of the Bridge and Mah Jongg games were provided by Harbour Haus and Keweenaw Mountain Lodge, again repeating their generosity each year. Other businesses contributing exciting prizes were: Calumet Golf Club, Crown Cleaners, Daily Mining Gazette, Dennis’s Greenhouse, High Tech Art by Colleen Kolbe, Kangas Caf and Catering, The Flower in Hancock, Toni’s Country Kitchen, the Yummy Bar and Zumba Lessons by Diane Messner. We thank each of them very much for helping to make our event fun and special for all.

But most of all we thank the attendees who contributed time and donations to help fund the many children’s programs under U.P. KIDS, among them Big Brothers Big Sisters, Foster Care, Adoption, Family Services, and Residential, providing schooling and a home for children sent to us by the Court. Our congratulations go out to the winning team in Bridge, Mary Healy and Jeanne Eilola, with second and third places going to Janice Crouch/Lorna Rowley and Sandi Engle/Charlotte Hermanson.

The winner of the Mah Jongg games this year was Chris Kelley, with Fran Ricci and Lou Helman placing second and third, respectively. Nice going!

Our thanks to Sharon Lahti who directed the Mah Jongg games! A thank you to all for your wonderful support. We hope to see you again next year!
