Schaefer running for commission

To the editor:

I am Richard Schaefer, running in the Aug. 5, Democratic primary for Keweenaw County Road Commission.

The recession and cutbacks in state and federal funds have hit Keweenaw County and especially the road commission hard. While the dollars may not come back soon, wise management of the existing funds is essential.

If elected, I will represent all the people of Keweenaw County and make the most efficient use of the available funds. My 33 years of experience in purchasing and materials Management for General Motors has given me a good understanding of business and financial matters. Securing parts and services at the lowest cost and the highest quality in a timely manner has been the primary goal. This experience provides a good background to support the Road Commission in a time of financial shortfall.

I have previously served on the Calumet Theatre Board, The Keweenaw County Historical Society Board, Keweenaw County Economic Development Committee, and The Grant Township Tax Review Board. Currently, I am a member of the Lac La Belle Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsman’s Club, the Keweenaw County Planning Commission, and president-elect of the CLK Rotary Club.

I take pride in volunteering and serving all people of the area. This volunteering has also given me a strong background to understand the needs and requirements of Keweenaw County.

I have an Undergraduate Degree in Marketing from Miami University (Ohio) and an MBA from the University of Dayton to further support my Business and Financial background. My wife, Rheta, and I have lived year round in the area since 2003 and love the area.

Please vote in the August 5. Primary.
