Extraordinary efforts of people

To the editor:

The last week of June, Houghton and Michigan Tech hosted almost 500 people from six continents for five days during the International Symposium on Society and Resource Management (ISSRM). To make this huge event successful in our small community required out-of-the-ordinary efforts from many organizations and individuals. As organizers of the event, we heard appreciative comments from dozens of attendees who were thoroughly impressed with the Keweenaw Peninsula, our local communities, and our people. From SkyWest adding extra flights and local hotels accommodating all these visitors, several of you had a hand in the success of this event. We would especially like to thank the City of Houghton for helping with transportation and all around planning, Keweenaw Brewing Company and The Continental Fire Company for hosting events, Calumet Township for hosting an event at Calumet Waterworks Park, Habenero’s Fresh Mexican Kitchen and 5th & Elm Coffeehouse for providing food, Smythtype Designs for an extraordinary job on the conference program and general helpfulness, Bohemia Printing (L’Anse) for the wonderful job on the t-shirts, Brenda and the crew of school bus drivers at Lamars, National Car Rental for bringing in extra vehicles, Brickside Brewery, Rosian Catering, Tony’s Country Kitchen, and all of the local businesses who contributed to the silent auction. All of these groups went well beyond any work we paid for and most donated time or goods. Of course, there were many more of you who helped with this event, we want you to know that we appreciate it all and that your efforts were well received. We made a great impression on these visitors and several told us, they will be back!
