Scripture needs to be understood

To the editor:

I don’t like to criticize what other Christians believe. Even when they make mistakes about doctrine, devout believers are better than spiritually dead skeptics. However, doctrinal errors should be corrected because the Bible is too important to be misunderstood.

A letter quoted I John 5:7-8 (King James Version) in which verse 7 differs from other translations of the Bible. It is not in the oldest manuscripts but is a spurious (fraudulent) addition to the KJV.

Scholars know this false statement was added to I John 5:7-8 (KJV): “For there are three that bear witness in heaven, the Father, the Word and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” (verse 7)

That falsely depicts God as a triune (three-in-one) spirit being. Elohim is the plural Hebrew word for God that identifies the divine family that created the heavens and the earth.

Man was made in the image of the two members of the family of God. They are the Father (Supreme Being, call “the only true God” by Jesus) and the Son (compare Genesis 1:26 and Proverbs 30:4).

Jesus said this about God’s intervention in the world: “of that day or that hour no one knows, not even the angels in Heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Mark 13:32)

Why did Jesus exclude the Holy Spirit? It is not a divine being like the Father or the Son but is God’s spirit emanating from Him, as described in Joel 2:28-29, Matthew 3:16, and Acts 2:1-18.

Jesus said many would come in his name and deceive many. Most of the two billion Christians have beliefs that contradict the Bible.
