Public library is an entitlement

To the editor:

As a resident of Chassell Township I have talked to a number of people regarding the upcoming PLDL vote and no one wants to see the library close. Two issues seem to be of concern. The first is having all Chassell Township property owners taxed, even though they may have no interest in using library services, and the second being that the library is offering nontraditional services and is moving to a social media agenda.

If Chassell Township votes to withdraw from the PLDL they would be the second to withdraw as Stanton Township did so some years back.

So now it comes down to a Yes or No vote on Nov. 8 with the choices being:

A “No” vote will keep Chassell Township in the PLDL and allow residents to obtain a library card – sometimes at no cost to them as they are not paying taxes and are being subsidized at the cost of others who do pay taxes. Cardholders will be able to benefit from traditional services, as well as free movies, TV shows and Nerfball contests as examples.

A “Yes” vote will take Chassell Township out of the PLDL while allowing residents to purchase a PLDL card. Withdrawing will allow Chassell Township taxpayers to decide where they want to spend their own money. Taxing individual parcels is unfair to many residents, as in my case, I have four parcels on my farm being taxed, and I have yet to be asked by a stalk of corn or a tree for a library card.

So now it comes down to a vote to have Chassell Township tax people beyond 2017 for yet another entitlement program. Less than half of the residents in Chassell Township have a PLDL card. Let Chassell Township taxpayers make their own decision as to where their money goes. For more information visit PLDLFacts.com.
