A fix for legalized pyramid scheme

To the editor:

The fact that Social Security is on the verge of collapse is know by one and all. Since it is a legalized pyramid scheme it should not surprise anybody. But, the reality is that it can not be allowed to collapse as it would be an economic disaster to retirees and, eventually the entire economy. Many modifications have been proposed and they all have one commonality, negatively impacting the income of current and/or future SSI beneficiaries.

I have 4 simple changes that will totally assure the future of SSI benefits and increase benefits for future beneficiaries at the same time:

1) Eliminate the current cap of $118,500.00 that SSI is deducted from.

2) If financial projections permit, to help offset the slight increase of taxes paid by businesses, reduce the SSI tax to 6.5 percent or less.

3) Cap the income that SSI benefits are calculated on to $250,000.00.

4) If financial projections permit, retroactively recalculate all current SSI beneficiaries’ income using this new cap.

I challenge Rep. Jack Bergman and Sens. Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters to state in this newspaper why my proposal will not work. If those reading this agree with my proposal, I urge you to contact your representative and senators via as many communication media as possible.
