Good luck with Copper Bowl

To the editor:

This Friday is the date of the annual Copper Bowl football game between Hancock and Houghton. As someone with close ties to both schools, let me wish both teams well in this contest.

Exactly 50 years earlier, another Copper Bowl game was held, and it concluded a remarkable season for the Hancock squad. They shut out seven of their eight opponents and gave up only six points for the season, intercepting 23 passes while allowing only 27 completions.

They were named the Upper Peninsula Class C team of the year, along with additional post-season recognition. The Michigan football playoffs were not to start for several years. Congratulations to the 1969 Bulldogs, whose unofficial motto was, “quality, not quantity.”
