GAY - One of Sherman Township's landmarks is getting an upgrade.

A new tile and carpeting project at The Gay Bar will soon be under way.

According to owner Bruce Fountain, the last time there was a remodel of that nature was 17 years ago. Dollar Bay Linoleum and Tile did the job last time and will be doing the job again this time.

"It's time for an upgrade," Fountain said. "... I think it's going to really dress it up."

While the remodel won't begin until Dec. 3, Fountain had the trim taken down from against the walls and has done some cleaning in preparation.

"I'm making it ready for the next 20 years," he said.

It is likely the bar will be closed in the morning in order to do the remodeling but Fountain said it's likely they will re-open in the afternoon. Fountain also expects to sand down the floor in the game room, but that won't be until the spring. The pool tables have also recently been refelted, he said.

The town of Gay, a mill town developed in 1898, was named after Joseph E. Gay, president of the Wolverine and Mohawk Mining Companies. According to Fountain, the building was originally the home of the Gay stamp mill superintendent Clement L. Adams.

Fountain took over the bar in 1996 and did some remodeling then.

"When we bought the place, everything was outdated," he said. "We spruced it up and we don't stop (updating). A lot of places quit going forward. We're not going to do that."

Fountain said they specialize in food and that's where a lot of their business comes from.

"We're known for our hot dogs," Fountain said. "We even have vegan hot dogs. So we try to have something for everybody."
