LAURIUM - For the first time in years, Laurium came together for a Christmas party.

The event, held Saturday at the village hall, included an afternoon session where children could sit with Santa Claus, a tree-lighting ceremony at Lake Linden Avenue and Hecla Street and a closing party with appetizers and live music at the village ballroom.

Organizer Loralee Miller said it was inspired by a similar event that used to be held in Laurium many years ago.

After getting to ride in a fire truck, children sing Christmas carols at the tree lighting ceremony in Laurium Saturday. The day also included visits with Santa Claus and a dance with live music and appetizers.

"The ballroom just got fixed a week-and-a-half ago, so we figured we'd take this opportunity to show the public it's functional again," she said.

Several lucky children got a ride down to the tree lighting ceremony in a fire truck, where they sang Christmas carols such as "Frosty the Snowman" and "Jingle Bells."

"I like to go and ride," said Chaice Binder, 4, of Calumet.

The event was sponsored by Laurium Fire Department, the village of Laurium, Toni's Country Kitchen, the Irish Times Restaurant, Root Notes and Nina's Restaurant.
