WELLS - A hat trick from Matt Mantta helped Jeffers to an 8-0 whipping of Negaunee on the first night of the Dick Johnsen Memorial Tournament Friday.
Mantta added two assists as the Jets finished off the Miners in the minimum two periods.
"I was proud of the fact they went out and played their game. They dictated the pace and didn't let up," Jeffers coach David Bekkala said.
Troy Dunstan opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 8:56 before Travis Wesa and Mantta tacked on tallies in the last minute of the first period.
The onslaught continued in the second, with Wesa getting his second of the game at 1:45. Nick Harris and Ross Michaels also scored before Mantta put in a pair to trigger the goal-differential rule.
Dax Durocher made seven saves to get the shutout for Jeffers (5-3), which will play Escanaba, the host, in today's championship.
