HOUGHTON - Impi J. Kemppainen, 100, a former resident of the Douglass House Apartments in Houghton, passed away Thursday morning, Jan. 3, 2013, at Cypress Manor Nursing Home in Hancock where she had been a resident patient for the past three years.
She was born in Portage Township on Apr. 12, 1912, a daughter of the late Henry and Minnie (Bukema) Etapa. She attended the local schools.
Impi was united in marriage to Wilbert Saari and in 1942, he preceded her in death due to injuries received in a mining accident. On Feb. 12, 1955, she was united in marriage to Ted Kemppainen and in August 1984, he preceded Impi in death.
Mrs. Kemppainen was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock.
Also preceding her in death were her sisters, Alma Kahler, Lillian Turunen and Doris Ross.
Surviving are her son, David (Charlene) Saari of South Milwaukee, Wis.; her granddaughter, Rijalynne (Greg) Saari-Perez of South Milwaukee; her sisters, Florence Heliste of Salmouth, Mich., and Betty Turner of Livonia, Mich.; her brothers, Robert Etapa of Washougal, Wash., Carl Etapa of Hurontown and James (Claudia) Etapa of Portage Township; and several nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends.
As requested, no visitation or service will take place and spring burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.
