The Daily Mining Gazette

L'ANSE - Tangling with the U.P.'s No. 2 boys' basketball team in Class ABC was too tough for L'Anse to handle Tuesday night, as Negaunee won going away, 70-42.

The Purple Hornets (3-5) stayed in contact with the Miners through the first half, trailing 25-15 at the break despite just four second-quarter points, but the Miners put up 25 and 20 over the last two frames to roll to victory.

"They put a lot of pressure defensively. They're long enough and have very quick hands and do a good job of getting in passing lanes," L'Anse coach Mike Ostermeyer said of the one-loss Miners.

Tyler Jandron led all scorers with 19 for the Miners. Eric Lori added 14.

L'Anse got 11 points from James Veker in his first action since an ankle injury against Calumet Jan. 3. Jacob Ostermeyer led his team in scoring, knocking down four triples for 12 points.

The Hornets return to WestPAC play with a Friday home game against West Iron County.

The Miners won the JV game.

DOLLAR BAY - The Bays' bid to double up their win total ended quickly Tuesday, as Superior Central outscored the Bays 19-4 in the first quarter to take the long road home with a win.

"They were consistent, probably in all areas," DB coach Jesse Kentala said of the visitors from Alger County.

Three Cougars scored in double figures, with Matt Verbrigghe and Bryce Richard posting a co-leading 16 apiece.

Dollar Bay had an above-average night offensively, but its 71 points against was a season worst.

"Even after made shots by us, we didn't get back quick enough and they took advantage of it. Probably 20 points off easy lay-ups," Kentala said.

Tom Dunstan led DB (1-8) with 12 points and Carl Kangas had 11. The Bays play Chassell at home next Tuesday.
