LAKE LINDEN - Robert W. Heikkila, 75, a former resident of Lake Linden, passed away Wednesday evening, Jan. 23, 2013, at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient for the past week.
He was born Aug. 11, 1937, in Hancock, a son of the late William and Inez (Strang) Heikkila. Bob was raised in Liminga and attended the Stanton Schools. He graduated from Houghton High School with the Class of 1955. Since 1996, he had made his home in the Tamarack City area.
On June 11, 1960, he was united in marriage to the former Judith Naasko and she preceded him in death on June 14, 1999.
Mr. Heikkila had worked as a sales clerk in the Houghton and Hancock area for Houghton Firestone Store, Montgomery Ward, Joffee's Men's Store, the Copper Rivet and Stern and Field's Men's Store.
Bob was active with the Stanton Athletic Club as a young adult. He was a former member of the Tamarack City Fire Department, a co-founder of T.C. Days, which are still held each year in Tamarack City. Bob was an avid Detroit Red Wing, Tiger and Lion fan.
Robert served his country with the 107th Engineers Michigan National Guard.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife; his son, William Heikkila.
Surviving are his daughter, Cheryl (Tom) Monette of Tamarack City; his granddaughters, Nicole Heikkila and Beth Heikkila; his great-grandson, Marky; his brother, Donald (Bette) Heikkila of Painesdale; a special friend, Nora Britz of Lake Linden; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services for Bob will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28 in the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hancock with Rev. D.J. Rasner to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Toivola Cemetery.
Friends may call on Monday from 3 until time of services in the funeral home.
