The Daily Mining Gazette

CALUMET - Peter Maierle, 90, a lifelong resident of Calumet, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Saturday, February 9, 2013.

He was born on September 18, 1922, in Calumet, a son of the late Peter and Sophie (Coemer) Maierle. He graduated from Calumet High School in January of 1941. Following graduation he attended Suomi College.

He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving during WW II.

Pete began his career working for Klaskey Brothers as a bookkeeper. Following, he worked 36 years in the banking profession, beginning with Merchants and Miners Bank (presently River Valley) in Calumet . He retired in December of 1987.

On August 19, 1987, he married the love of his life, Joan Faller, at Queen of Peace Parish in Kingsford, Michigan.

Pete had a love for gardening. From raspberries to herbs, he could make anything grow. He also had a lifelong love for baseball and played in the local leagues. He enjoyed being a coach for Little League. That passion for baseball never ended. He was an avid Detroit Tigers fan and eventually turned Joan into one, too. He also rooted for the Detroit Lions and Red Wings. Pete was active in golfing and bowling and participated in local leagues into his 70's. He enjoyed swimming in Lake Superior well into his 80's.

His other hobbies included coin collecting, playing pinochle, and crossword puzzles. He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Church and the Men's Club. Presently, he was serving on the board at Coppertown.

He will be remembered for his sense of wit, which all of his children knew as a Pete Joke. Most of all, Pete will be remembered as a loving, kind and compassionate husband, dad, grandpa and papa.

Preceding him in death was his father Peter Maierle; mother Sophie Maierle Blitz; stepfather Stanley Blitz; brother Larry; sister-in-law, Irene; and brother Carl Maierle.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, and five children: Ron (Chris) Waara of Mud Lake, Claire Waara of Norway, Ellen (Randy) Britton of Marquette, Tom (Kierstin) Waara of Lake Linden and Carolyn (Mark) Hughes of Duluth, MN; eight grandchildren: Sara (John), Rob, Phil (Nicole), Max, Billy, Maya, Jack and Lily; three great-grandchildren: John IV J, Lyla, and Macie; sister-in-law Elizabeth; brother-in-law, James (Cindy) Faller; sister-in-law, Mary (Don) Ross. He is also survived by one nephew; two grand-nephews; one niece; and two cousins. He will surely be missed by his Sheltie, Mickey, his first and only pet.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul the Apostle Church in Calumet with Fr. Francis Dobrzenski to officiate.

Friends may call at the Erickson Crowley Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, from 4-7 p.m. A parish prayer service will be held in the funeral home at 7:00 PM on Tuesday.
