To the editor:
The words "for profit" clarify. In front of a corporate name, they give the primary purpose of that company: To make a profit. For 100 years Portage Health has had the words "non profit" associated with its name. During that period its primary purpose was to provide health care.
When it adds "for profit" to its name, its primary purpose will be to make a profit - by definition. It will still provide health care, but that will not be its primary purpose.
As a consumer of medical services I would have been more comfortable if Portage Health had chosen to align itself with a non profit entity such as the Mayo Clinic.
