Two-and-a-half-year-old Charlie Guindon puts some frosting on a cookie cut to look like the hat worn by Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat Saturday at the Portage Lake District Library. The annual “Dr. Seuss Extravaganza” is coordinated by the Michigan Technological University Circle K service organization with the help of the Houghton High School Key Club. Hal Holmes, Circle K president, said the idea of the event is to get children excited about reading. Holmes said the event is usually held as close to Seuss’s birthday of March 2 as possible but that couldn’t be done this year. Besides decorating cookies, the children were read to by the volunteers from Seuss books, including the Cat in the Hat.
