Tables turned on Baraga Co. Minor softball

July 18, 2013
The Daily Mining Gazette

MARQUETTE - The tide turned against the Baraga County minor (age 9-10) softball All-Stars over the last two days as Negaunee won both championship games 13-3 and 11-1.

Wednesday, Negaunee's six-run second inning broke up a 1-1 tie and propelled the Irontown outfit into the state tournament.

Negaunee pitcher Karlie Patron struck out 12 of 13 batters faced in a dominating performance, allowing no hits in the four-inning game.

Baraga's only run came while Maija Rice drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first and came around to score on a wild pitch.

In Tuesday's first championship game, Negaunee allowed just one hit and scored in all four innings.

Rice doubled for the only Baraga hit as it scored twice in the first inning but gave up five Negaunee runs in the bottom of the inning. Kaitlyn Voskuhl, Summer Dudo and Chloe LaForest recorded Baraga's runs.
