HANCOCK - Elsie Cevilla (Feigley) Hinzmann, a long time resident of Hancock, died at Keller Lake Retirement Community on August 21, 2013, in Grand Rapids, Mich. She was 95 years old.
Born June 29, 1918, in Galion, Ohio, Elsie was one of three children and the only daughter born to parents, Georgia (Steffey) and Elmer Feigley. She and her brothers, Cloyd and Merlin, were raised in Milford, Mich. Elsie was a member of the 1936 graduating class of Milford High School on Hickory Street. Elsie had a special relationship with her brothers - their sibling antics lasting well into adulthood. Merlin, but especially Cloyd, always knew exactly how to push her buttons and rile her up. The expression "Oh Cloyd" was often heard. Although these tiffs began with anger for Elsie, they always ended up in laughter for the three of them. Elsie had a sharp, sarcastic wit and truely loved to laugh.
Following her schooling, Elsie began work at the Oakland County State Bank on Main Street, Milford where she was a teller. It is here that she first met the young Paul R. Hinzmann. After a brief courtship, the two were married on September 13, 1941; a marriage totaling 71 years at the time of Paul's passing in November of 2012.
The couple made their first home together in Milford, before following Paul's teaching opportunities to Des Plaines, Ill., and onto Hancock, where they permanently settled and raised their daughter and son. Elsie and Paul eventually invested in property on the Torch Bay of Portage Lake-just a mere 10 miles away-and built their brilliant red cottage. It was here that many family and friends visited and delighted in the few warm months of the U.P. While summering at the cottage, Elsie traveled back daily to the main homestead to retrieve the newspaper and mail. Hancock was their home for 62 years.
The cottage on the lake was a special place that Elsie enjoyed, especially when hosting family and friends and making memories which included waterskiing into her seventies. She baked fantastic blueberry muffins from the wild berries nearby. Her summers were busy times full of activites, visitors and trips to Isle Royale National Park. She always said the winters in the Copper Country were long but enjoyed cross country skiing and showshoeing.
Elsie and Paul enjoyed traveling to visit various locations with family members. Wonderful and often recounted memories were made on trips across the United States and abroad. They also enjoyed Square and Folk dancing and participation in many other community activities.
Elsie's talents as a bank teller were used in many capacities over the years. She served as treasurer at the First United Methodist Church in Hancock and was also involved in the managing finances for the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, in which both Paul and Elsie were very active. Additionally, she was also active in the Michigan Tech Wives organization and the United Methodist Women.
Elsie was preceded in death by Paul, her husband of 71 years; her brother, Cloyd O. Feigley; her parents; and a dear aunt, Elva Beck.
She is survived by her daughter, Georgia (Hugh) Makens of Grand Rapids Mich. and son, Vincent (Nancy) Hinzmann of Milford, Mich.; her three grandchildren, Craig (Sarah Cheney) Makens of Houghton, Brett (Sarah) Makens of Tallinn, Estonia and Sandi (Todd) Marvar of Plesant Ridge, Mich; great-grandchildren, Elsie Cheney-Makens, Hadley, Finnia and Padrig Makens and Harper Marvar. Also her brother, Merlin Feigley; sister-in-law, Margery Feigley and loving nieces and nephews, Deborah Saputo, Dale (Sherry) Feigley, Donald (Tama) Feigley, Dorothy Magyari, Doreen (Darryl) Kettle and Michael Feigley.
