HOUGHTON - Houghton High School could win $100,000 and a Kelly Clarkson concert in an online competition - but it needs votes to do it.

The school is registered in the State Farm Insurance Celebrate My Drive competition, which will give $100,000 to the 10 schools receiving the most vote. The next 90 schools will receive $25,000. Two grand prize winners will also host a concert by Kelly Clarkson.

Voting starts Friday and continues until Oct. 26. People 14 or older can register.

The exterior of Houghton High School is seen Monday. Starting Friday, people will be able to vote for Houghton High School in an online contest from State Farm. If Houghton wins in its division, it would receive $100,000 and a Kelly Clarkson concert.

Ten percent of the grant must go towards a teen driving safety program for the school's students; the school can then spend the other 90 percent on school needs approved by State Farm. If Houghton wins, the money will go towards field trips, community activities and the Michigan Technological University Trails.

"Should we win, with the funds that we receive, we would like to do educational opportunities for our high school students that would give back to the community as well," said Houghton-Portage Township Schools Superintendent Doreen Klingbeil.

People who have registered at the site are allowed to vote once per day. Klingbeil encouraged people to share the link with friends and family.

"It looks like a great opportunity," she said. "If our voting is getting up there in numbers then we'll send out some more emails and be more specific about the possibility of what we'll do with the funds if we win."

Schools will compete in two categories; Houghton will compete against other schools with 750 or fewer students.

State Farm created the contest in 2012 to promote life-long safe driving habits.

As of this morning, 3,337 schools have registered for the contest. Winners will be announced on Dec. 9.
