MARQUETTE - Finlandia softball split six games at its season-opening tournament at the Superior Dome over the weekend.
The Lions opened Saturday with a 4-0 win over Marian, dropped a 7-6 contest to Simpson, edged Edgewood 4-3, then wrapped up the night with an 8-0 loss to Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Sunday, Lakeland dropped the Lions 10-4 before Finlandia recovered for a 9-7 win over Wisconsin-Superior.
In the win over Superior, the Lions had 11 hits and scored three times in both the first and third innings, repelling multiple UWS comeback attempts.
Alexis Lawley went 2-for-3 with two solo home runs.
Against Lakeland, the Lions were tied 4-4 after three innings but gave up three in the fourth and sixth.
Lawley had two hits, including a home run, while Alyson Herman had a two-RBI double.
Finlandia was held to two hits by Oshkosh in the Saturday late game.
Against Edgewood, India Slayback's RBI ground-rule double drove in the eventual winning run in he top of the sixth, with pitcher Miranda Brewer stranding the tying run on second with a strikeout. Lawley and Hillary Brewer had three hits.
Finlandia took the lead with a Hillary Brewer grand slam in the seventh against Simpson, only to surrender two and the game in the bottom of the inning.
Lawley and M.J. Huffman had three hits apiece.
Against Marian, Miranda Brewer held the Sabres to no runs on three hits while Breanna Hynes had three hits and an RBI.
