SOUTH RANGE - Elsie Marie Eskola, 97, formerly of South Range, passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock, where she had been a resident.
She was born in Raymbaultown on May 8, 1916, the daughter of the late Alfred and Gretha (Heikkila) Lievonen.
Elsie moved to Detroit and worked for Knibbe Manufacturing as the secretary and paymaster.
Elsie was married to Nels Eskola on May 1, 1943, in Napoleon, Ohio. They lived in Detroit for a few years and moved back to South Range in 1945. Nels preceded her in death on January 2, 1993.
Elsie worked as the South Range village clerk and later became the Adams Township treasurer.
She was a member of the Range Apostolic Lutheran Church of South Range. She served as treasurer for the church for many years.
Elsie enjoyed sewing and learned various crafts. She was a member of the South Range Extension club and a 4-H leader for many years teaching girls how to sew.
Surviving are a daughter, Helen (Doug) Wills of DePere, Wis.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn (Edward) GrechCumbo of Peoria, Ariz.
Besides her parents and husband, Elsie was also preceded in death by three sisters, Verna, Mabel and Esther; and three brothers, Ernest, Thomas and Douglas Lievonen.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 20, 2014, in the Range Apostolic Lutheran Church, Second Street, South Range, with Pastor Chuck Bylkas to officiate.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Thursday in the church.
Spring burial will be in the Mountain View Cemetery in South Range.
Memorials may be made to Range Apostolic Lutheran Church in the name of Elsie Eskola.
