College Football: Finlandia football visits Trine University this week

Lions still gunning for their first victory

HANCOCK — Two-time defending MIAA champion Trine Unversity has had its share of ups and downs this football season.

The Thunder, who host Finlandia University this Saturday, won their first three games of the season and were ranked No. 23 among Divison III schools.

Then the Thunder saw its 23-game win streak ended after three straight losses in league play.

One of the setbacks was a 51-0 thrashing at the hands of Hope College.

Lions coach Travis Wiltzius said Trine is still a dangerous team.

“They were conference champs the last two years, so they’re still a formidable team,” Wiltzius said. “They’ll be looking to get straightened out against us, and we’ll have to be ready to play.”

The Lions (0-6, 0-3) had an auspicious start against Hope College last week.

Quarterback Darin Johnson and wide receiver Josh Eve connected on an 83-yard flea-flicker on the first play of the game.

But it was one of Finlandia’s only highlights in a 79-12 loss.

“It was a good way to begin the game,” Wiltzius said. “But Hope just had too many weapons for us.”

Trine will look to quarterback Alex Price, who has passed for more than 800 yards this season. Adams Gutting caught two TD passes last week against Olivet College.

Finlandia will look to Johnson, who has had a decent season passing and running the ball.

“Darin has had to learn on the fly, he’s used his athleticism,” Wiltzius said.

Eve and Kenny Kujawa remain the top receiving threats.

Freshman tailback Bailey Harris and sophomore Tate Kay propel the ground game.

The Lions return home on Nov. 2 against Albion College.
