College Soccer: MTU falls to Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS — The Michigan Tech soccer team suffered its third consecutive defeat Sunday afternoon as they lost 3-1 against Ferris State from Bulldogs Soccer Field.

Ferris State got on the board first with a goal two minutes into the contest when Bri Rogers received the ball off a throw-in and curled a shot into the top corner. The Bulldogs struck again in the 25th minute off a goal kick. Brandi Wagner finished past junior goaltender Amanda Young for the goal.

The Huskies (3-4-1, 0-2 GLIAC) got on the board with a goal from Gabby Sgambati in the 84th minute. Sophomore Alexis Shatrau beat her defender down the right flank and got herself into the box before sending in a low cross to Sgambati. The Sgambati got a touch in front of the net before scoring her third goal of the season.

The Huskies backline denied a long-ball opportunity for the Bulldogs (8-1-1, 2-0) and a pass from sophomore Tate Robison helped spring Shatrau down the right flank.

The Huskies took 18 total shots compared to 31 for the Bulldogs.

“We made some early mistakes that cost us three goals, but beyond that I thought we played a decent game against a solid opponent,” MTU head coach Michelle Jacob said. “It’s obviously frustrating to lose games, but we continue to improve as a team. There were a lot of players who stepped up for us today and I’m proud of those efforts.”

The Huskies host Northern Michigan (2-7, 0-2 GLIAC) at noon on Sunday, Oct. 13.
